Chapter 1107
Conner knew all too well the heartache of losing a loved one, and he understood just how much Maja meant to Annie.
After dropping Annie off at the Martin place and watching her safely go inside, he started his drive back home. On the way, he called Asher. "Hey Asher, if we happen to bump into Maja, make sure to catch her alive. No shooting."
"You've lost it, haven't you?"
"Nope, I'm good."
Asher picked up on the gravity in Conner's voice, realizing he wasn't joking, and replied, "Alright, got it. Just make sure you wrap up your date and get back soon. Don't leave all the work to me."
Conner chuckled, "Why don't you find a date too? Maybe Annie can set you up with someone?"
"Get outta here. Not all of us are eager to tempt fate by marrying a cop, worried about being hauled in all at once."
Conner shot back, "You can be secretly jealous."
After some playful back-and-forth with no clear winner, they hung up as Conner reached home.
Meanwhile, Annie, back at her parents' place, knocked on their bedroom door. "Hey, what's up? Why are you still awake?"
She said, "Mom, Dad, let my sister know that I love Conner. If anything happens to him, I'll be heartbroken."
Annie was stuck trying to stop the cycle of revenge. Her only hope was that Conner's love for her would spare her sister, and her love for Conner would keep her sister from harming him. She was caught in the middle, unsure of what to do.
At some undisclosed location, Maja, who had been missing for a while, was sitting on a sofa, her fingers running over her wedding ring in the gentle moonlight. Memories of Emmery flooded her mind, and the more she missed him, the more bitterness filled her eyes.
"Knock, knock, knock," came a sound at the door.
Maja lowered her hand and eyed the door cautiously, "Who's there?"
"If Ms. Maja is still awake, I'll come in," said a man with a sly grin as he entered. His eyes were sharp and calculating, clearly intent on whatever Maja had.
Maja wasn't fooled, "If you trust Conner, you're already falling for it."
Annie had been home for three days, with cars picking her up every day. She kept Conner updated on the latest at Havenbrook, "Molly had baby boy; the squad's been pretty
quiet lately, I'm really missi Proget
sweetie, but Mia's studying and Andre and Hansen are looking after the kids. With you not around, I feel awkward dropping by."
"I'll call Andre and have him bring the kids over for you."
"No need, without you here, I'm genuinely scared sweetie will end up taking this cop on a trip to the police station."
Conner quickly jumped in, "Weren't we supposed to let my little mishap go?" He still couldn't believe she kept bringing up the time a toddler landed him at the police station. "And besides, Teddy, Asher, Mars they all got dragged in too, not just me."
Conner joked, "If we're going down in embarrassment, let's do it together."
Annie laughed, "That would be quite the story."
"Just for that, you wait and see."noveldrama
The Nettleton family's way of delivering a "surprise" always felt like being called out for a schoolyard brawl.
Three days after Annie returned to work, she had a day off. A baby's squeal brought everyone to a halt.
Easton, startled, jumped up and hurried over to the little one, "Henry, who'd you come with today?"
Little Henry stood there with his chubby cheeks, mumbling, "Ah, daddy puff puff!" Easton breathed a sigh of relief, grateful it wasn't his mom or aunt.
What do you think?
