Chapter 1104
"Annie, this is where I grew up," Conner said, taking in the surroundings. In his memories, the place was always lively, with people mingling and never knowing when a small bump could spark a gang fight.
"Back then, whenever a fight broke out, my mom would cover my eyes and drag me inside. But I'd sneak peeks through the cracks. Eventually, I got involved too, the youngest of the bunch," Conner glanced at the girl beside him, "trying to protect my mom. If I was in a gang, no one would dare mess with her."
Annie turned back, meeting Conner's gaze in silence.
Conner pointed suddenly at a small window, "See that? That's where I was born and raised. There was a crack under that wooden window. In winter, the cold air would sneak in, freezing us. I used to stuff it with crumpled paper, which helped a bit, but it was still chilly. One day, my mom noticed the paper when she was making the bed. She glued up the window, and from then on, it only opened halfway."
Annie looked over, the room dark as night, "What happened to your mom?"
"To keep me from fighting, she wanted me to get an education, so she sent me to the Nettleton family," Conner said, his eyes cold. "She sent me to a mansion where I had everything, but she ended up on the chopping block. Emmery's mom couldn't touch me, so she took it all out on her."
Conner continued, "She said she'd find a good man to marry and wouldn't have to drag me around like a burden. In the end, it was me, the burden, who cost her everything."
Annie saw the moisture in Conner's eyes and felt his pain. She knew the Nettleton family had deep grudges that were hard to escape.
That's why she wanted to become a cop.
"Conner, I... I have something I want to ask you..."
"Just say it, no need to dance around."
Annie paused, the shops around them closed, leaving only streetlights casting a glow on path "I need to ask you a favor."

Conner narrowed his gaze, "You know she's alive?"
Annie replied, "She must have reached out to my parents. If something terrible happened to her, they'd be too devastated to act normal. But since she disappeared, they've been fine." Even more whenever her parents saw her, they seemed to hold back, not wanting her at home, likely to keep her out of Conner's sight.
Annie knew her sister wanted her to stay away from Conner, or perhaps, to make her hate him.
That way, if she ever did something to Conner, she wouldn't feel the heartbreak.
