Chapter 686
Everett's hand suddenly clenched, the veins on the back of it standing out sharply.
In the conference room, tension hung thick in the air like an approaching storm. Every subordinate kept their heads down, barely daring to breathe, worried they might get caught up in the brewing chaos. They had learned from past experiences that whenever Mr. Everett's marriage hit a rough patch, their own lives tended to get equally stormy...
In the next instant, Everett stood up and stormed out.
Alex was momentarily stunned, frozen in place. It took her a moment to snap back to reality before she hurriedly raced after him.
The black Mercedes Maybach roared out of the underground garage, weaving through traffic at lightning speed.
By the time Alex made it outside, the car was already disappearing from sight. Fear gripped her she remembered too well how, three years ago, he had driven recklessly and gotten into an accident. His health couldn't handle that kind of stress now...
She quickly flagged down a taxi and set off in pursuit.noveldrama
Her heart was in her throat as she watched the car dart recklessly through traffic, feeling like it might leap out of her chest at any moment.
An hour later, the car pulled up at the airport.
But even after parking by the curb, Everett didn't get out.
Confused, Alex paid the cab fare, got out, and approached the driver's side window, gently tapping on it.
The window rolled down slowly, revealing a handsome face tinged with paleness.
She couldn't help but worry. "Mr. Everett, are you alright?"
"I'm fine."
Everett's gaze drifted past her, fixing on the airport entrance.
Alex knew he wanted to go inside; he was reluctant to let go. Otherwise, he wouldn't have raced here so desperately. She glanced at her phone and then encouraged him, "Mr. Everett, Mrs. Everett's flight doesn't leave for another half hour. If you want to see her off, you still have time to go inside!"
Everett shook his head slowly.
"I didn't come to stop her."
"I just... wanted to see her off."
Maybe it was the last time he'd see her.
He knew Selena well enough to know she always gave her all to avoid regrets. Once she made a decision, she wouldn't look back. That night when she asked him if he had his reasons, it was her final attempt.
Alex sighed, "Mr. Everett, why put yourself through this?"
...
Inside the airport, Selena was saying her goodbyes to Brook and Ricky.
Brook held onto her, not wanting to let her leave. "Do you really have to go?"
Selena reassured him, "Uncle, it's not
like I'm going abroad. Northtown's
just a four-hour flight away. If you
miss me, I can always come back to visit."
That seemed to comfort him.
Brook
Ped his tears and hugged
Mateo, "My dear boy, make
sure
Back and see your g s you." Content bete.
Mateo hugged his neck and replied sweetly, "I'll miss you too, Uncle."
Ricky chimed in, "And me?"
Mateo, quick to catch on, added, "I'll miss Uncle Ricky too."
Ricky playfully pinched his little nose, "That's more like it. Don't grow up to be heartless like your dad!"
Mateo didn't quite understand, blinking innocently.
As they all reluctantly parted, Selena glanced toward the airport entrance. But only for a few seconds before she turned away, leaving no lingering attachment.
The announcement for the Northtown flight boarding echoed through the hall.
Selena took Mateo's hand, and with Ava carrying a sleeping Haley, they boarded the plane.
In the sky, a plane soared, cutting through the clouds and leaving a long trail behind.
Everett leaned against his car, gazing upwards.
Even after the plane disappeared into the clouds, he remained in that position, unmoving.
It felt as if his soul had been carried away with it.
After a long while, Alex gently reminded him, "Mr. Everett, it's time to head back."
Mrs. Everett was gone. No matter how long he stood there, it wouldn't change a thing.
What do you think?
